Throughout the pandemic, there have been many songs that have helped make this difficult time more bearable. The upbeat and whimsical song Goodnight n Go, sung by Ariana Grande, is one of the many songs I listened to constantly in the spring of 2020. I was a fan of the original version written and sung by Imogen Heap, and was ecstatic to learn that one of my favorite pop stars is a fan of hers as well.
Sketches
I began creating a word list that would help spark ideas for my sketches. The song is about falling in love, and not wanting to say goodnight. There's a line in the song "one of these days you'll miss your train, and come stay with me." So I decided to think of how I could utilize a train in the final illustrations.
Many of the sketches I created had to do with trains and the night scape. Since the original songwriter is from England, I visualized some of these from her perspective, and used the design of a typical London train you'd find at Paddington Station. I also tried to find visuals that were reminiscent of Ariana Grande's brand, so I implemented a lot of clouds in my sketches.
Digital Sketches
In my final illustrations, I wanted to create graphics that were romantic, dreamy, and nostalgic. It was fun creating different textures for the cloud illustrations, and it was a challenge to adjust the position of the typography. In these final graphics, I was able to create visuals that were very feminine, whimsical and fun.
